Meet Kent Healy
Kent Healy is known around the island of Martha's Vineyard for his skills as a civil engineer. He has designed projects ranging from bridges and dock bulkheads to dirt roads and systems for erosion protection. But he is also known for his activism and civic involvement. Kent has been working to secure a good future for this community off the coast of Massachusetts since he moved here in 1983. He has served on various town building committees as well as the island's solid waste committee, and is a founding member of the West Tisbury Energy Group.
In everything he tackles as an engineer and activist, Kent is a problem solver. That's why he appreciates UCS's positive, solutions-oriented approach. He was taught long ago: "You get more with honey than with vinegar."
Kent joined UCS in 1978 because of his concern about the spread of nuclear weapons and America's over-reliance on fossil fuels. These days, he is especially worried about how global warming will affect his island home. To bring visibility to the issue, he sponsored an October 2002 talk at which two UCS senior scientists informed local citizens of the impact climate change is having on the community, and what can be done to prevent it from getting worse. Kent and others in the community hope to parlay this raised awareness into support for solar energy projects and a climate action plan.
A founding member of UCS's Henry Kendall Society, Kent feels that UCS does a more effective job expressing his viewpoints than he can alone, through its strong publications, scientific credibility, knowledge of the political process, and access to decision makers in Congress and elsewhere. "If you are interested in peace and security in the world," he says, "it just makes good sense to support UCS."
