Ways to Give
Gifts of Stock

Making a gift of securities can be a wise way of contributing to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Stocks, bonds, mutual funds

Giving stock that has been held longer than one year allows you to avoid paying any capital gains tax that would otherwise be due. In addition, you can claim a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock on the date on which it was transferred, not just for what it was worth when you acquired it.

The best way to give stock, bonds or mutual funds to the Union of Concerned Scientists is to have your broker transfer your securities to UCS's account at UBS Financial Services. To do this, you will need to know that UCS's Depository Trust Company (DTC) number is 221, and its account number is RG 01561. Ms. Casey Rader is our representative at UBS, 265 Franklin Street, Boston, MA 02110. Her telephone number is 617-439-8276.

Please let us know in advance if you are transmitting securities via DTC. Call Cindy Chang at 800-666-8276 ext. 283 or email her at cchang@ucsusa.org. You may also find it convenient to send us a copy of the letter of authorization to your broker. You can send it by fax to Cindy Chang at 617-864-9405.

Stock certificates

If you hold stocks or bonds in certified form, you may send the certificates by certified mail (with return receipt requested, if you would like to receive proof of its delivery) to the Union of Concerned Scientists, attention Cindy Chang, 2 Brattle Square, Cambridge, MA 02238. Do not endorse the certificate.

In a separate envelope that can be mailed with regular postage, send us one stock power for each stock certificate. UCS can provide a stock power (please call Cindy Chang at 800-666-8276 ext. 283 to request one) or your broker can provide one for you. Please sign the stock power as your name is listed on the stock certificate. Please include a dated letter that describes the stock and contains your signature as it appears on the stock power and stock certificate. Upon receipt, your stock gift will be recorded and the certificate sent to our broker for immediate disposition.

Mutual funds held by the fund company

The best way to make a gift of mutual funds that are held by the fund company is to write to the fund with instructions to establish a new account to transfer the shares to the Union of Concerned Scientists, attention Cindy Chang, 2 Brattle Square, Cambridge, MA 02238. UCS's tax identification number is 04-2535767, and your letter should be signature-guaranteed by your broker or banker. Send your letter by certified mail, and please send a copy to Cindy Chang at the above address.

Note: most mutual fund companies have an 800 number for shareholder questions. You may want to call your fund company to confirm the transfer procedure before mailing your letter of instructions.
